The Volu-Firm™ Complex contains Tripeptide 1, a biomimetic peptide that helps support processes critical for skin repair.* This specialized peptide “mimics” skin factors which can influence skin behaviors. It is structurally similar to skin-signaling proteins that tell healthy cells to do what they already know how to do – like make more proteins or communicate with one another. Strong cell communication is fundamental to skin health, since when cells stop “talking” to one another, normal skin function can become impaired.
This peptide also promotes the synthesis of two proteins in skin* that are critical to its strength and support – fibronectin and laminin. Unlike collagen and elastin, proteins that can appear throughout the dermis, fibronectin and laminin are localized primarily in the area of the skin known as the dermal-epidermal junction (DEJ) which is where the epidermis connects to the dermis.
While collagen and elastin perform a structural role in the skin, fibronectin and laminin primarily influence the communication of cells in the DEJ as well as cellular adhesion – the process through which cells physically bind together and to the DEJ. These two processes are essential if skin is to function properly.
In younger skin, the fingerlike projections of the DEJ – imagine a wavy line – allow nutrients to flow from one layer to another. As skin ages, these "waves" begin to flatten. This makes the skin more fragile, decreasing the amount of nutrients available to the epidermis and interfering with the skin's normal repair process. This flattening of the DEJ can cause skin to wrinkle and sag, so anything that can be done to support this area is a good thing for aging skin.
